Jim Kirsch, NDSU research technician in animal sciences, is this year’s recipient of NDSU’s Mary McCannel Gunkelman Recognition Award. Kirsch was honored during a ceremony held Thursday, May 2 at the Harry D. McGovern Alumni Center.

The Gunkelman Award was created in 1987 by the late John L. Gunkelman and his family in memory of Mary McCannel Gunkelman. The award is given annually to the student, staff member or faculty member who best makes the campus a welcoming, friendly place. This year there were 86 nominees for the award.

Kirsch was selected for his passion surrounding teaching and training undergraduate and graduate students while helping to create a positive culture focused on education, engagement and teamwork. In addition to teaching, Kirsch serves as the advisor of NDSU’s Saddle and Sirloin Club. Kirsch has worked at NDSU for over 40 years.

“Wow, what a surprise. I am honored to receive the Gunkelman Award and would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. Thank you for bestowing upon me this prestigious award,” Kirsch said.

Gunkelman was a 1942 graduate of the College of Home Economics. She was dedicated to the principle that a student is more apt to attain his or her full potential in an enjoyable environment. Throughout her life, Gunkelman’s greatest expression and satisfaction was in creating an atmosphere of happiness for others to enjoy.
