Professional Experience
Prof. Wenjie Xia is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU) since 2018. Dr. Xia obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2016. Prior to joining NDSU, he was an MGI-CHiMaD (Materials Genome Initiative – Center for Hierarchical Materials Design) Fellow at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Xia is currently also a faculty in the interdisciplinary programs, Materials and Nanotechnology (MNT) and Biomedical Engineering (BME) at NDSU. Dr. Xia’s teaching interests include engineering materials and mechanics at the undergraduate level, as well as molecular modeling and multiscale modeling of materials.
Research
Dr. Xia’s research interest lies in understanding the complex behaviors of hierarchical materials via bottom-up predictive modeling and data-driven approaches for design and prediction of their performance in structure/infrastructure, energy, and bioengineering applications. Dr. Xia and his group aim to develop multiscale modeling tools and establish innovative materials-by-design frameworks to facilitate design and development of high-performance multifunctional materials by integrating fundamental theories, multiscale modeling, computation, and experiments. Dr. Xia’s research is broadly under the scopes of the Materials Genome Initiative and the University’s Grand Challenge Initiative.
Academic Highlights
Dr. Xia has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals in computational materials and nanoscale science, including Science Advances, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, Advanced Functional Materials, etc. Dr. Xia has received multiple honors and awards, including the NIST-MML Accolade for Technical Excellence, MGI-CHiMaD Fellowship, Walter P. Murphy Fellowship, and Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad. He has been selected as the finalist for the APS Frank J. Padden Jr. Award for excellence in graduate polymer research. Dr. Xia has frequently served as a peer reviewer for top journals, such as Science Advances, Nano Letters and ACS titles. He also chaired many national/international conference sessions and delivered tens of invited lectures in academia and industry.
