English, taught English in Wahpeton, North Dakota, for 30 years of a 34-year teaching career. After retirement, he was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives. He was the founding president of the Bagg Bonanza Farm Historic Preservation Society. He lived in Wahpeton, with a lake residence on West Battle Lake, Minnesota.
