Earlier in his career, he was a North Dakota educator who worked as a business instructor in Drake, teaching principal in McVille, secondary principal in Northwood, superintendent in Turtle Lake, and superintendent for Divide County Public Schools for 20 years. He received the 2000 Greater North Dakota Association Educator Award and the 2008 Peltier Award for Innovative Teaching. He lived in Fargo.
