civil engineering, worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Washington and Oregon on road projects. He later worked as an engineer in Anchorage, Fairbanks and the North Slope on the Trans Alaska Pipeline. He then became a pilot, serving with the Air Force and National Guard. He then managed and lived on the family farm near Absaraka, North Dakota.
