sociology/criminal justice, worked on crab and fishing boats in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska for a time following graduation. He later was a 21-year member of the Minot, North Dakota, Police Department, where he was commander of the SWAT team. In 2005 he was selected as the department's Employee of the Year. He lived in Minot.
