agriculture, was elected to Congress by special election Oct. 22, 1963, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Rep. Hjalmar Nygaard, and he was re-elected to eight succeeding congresses. He was elected to the U.S Senate in November 1980 and served until Jan. 3, 1987. Following his political career, he and Jacqueline Balk-Tusa established a successful consulting firm based in Washington, D.C. He also was a director of Tenneco Inc. and Nodak Mutual Insurance. He was an NDSU Harvest Bowl honoree in 1979 from Cass County. He lived in Fargo.
