economics, had a 36-year career in the military. He was a combat helicopter pilot for the U.S. Marines in Vietnam, flying more than 1,100 missions. He later joined the North Dakota Army National Guard, where he was  afull-time technician, aviation test pilot and maintenance officer. He retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He lived in Bismarck, North Dakota.
