Frequently Asked Questions

Will I earn degree-eligible credit?  No, our NDSU Continued Learning courses do not earn university credit that can be used for a university degree.   

Are courses 100% Online?  Yes, our online courses are completely online, and you do not have to attend in person lectures.  All course descriptions indicate the method of course delivery.   

What is the refund policy?  In most cases you can receive a 100% refund if you have not accessed the course or logged into the course.  Refund policies can vary by vendor and course.  All policies are stated in the course description or the vendor FAQ. 

Defining Continued Learning 

Continued Education – Continuing education courses are designed for personal and professional development.  Generally, adults take continuing education courses after completing a formal degree, often to meet licensure or certification requirements.  CE is often required for professionals such as real estate agents among others.  

Professional Development – Learners who are committed to advancing their careers.  Generally, adults that are working toward a personal or professional goal whether in a current role or positioning for a promotion or new opportunity.  

Workforce Development – Refers to strategies and initiatives to improve skills, knowledge and employability to meet current and future workforce needs.  Often created in response to changing industry demands, technological advancements or economic challenges.   

 

Defining Your Credential 

Certificates – awarded for completing a credit or non-credit plan of coursework or a training program.  A certificate is a formal recognition for a specific program and is often short term and practical to meet employer needs.  

Certification – a more formal credential that is awarded for passing an exam or demonstrating competencies in a field or occupation often approved by a certifying organization. 

Digital Badge – provides a visual representation of your skills or achievements and are easily shared through resumes and platforms like LinkedIn.   

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) – measure participation in an accredited continuing education course.  Often are used to maintain a professional licensure or certification.  CEU’s are often non-credit and focused on professional development rather than academic credit toward a degree.  

 

Further defining a CEU and its’ value: according to IACET and the Department of Education task force, 1 CEU = 10 contact hours.  CEU’s can often be converted into other measurements such as Professional Development Hours or Continuing Education Credits depending on the regulating body.  See IACET for more information International Association for Continued Education & Training
