Emergency Management
Communities face many complex threats from natural and manmade sources that are further complicated by pre-existing social, economic, and political stressors. This hazardous reality requires not just leaders, but visionary leaders. We need leaders who are critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and effective partnership builders to tackle these many, and interrelated, challenges. Students graduating with the NDSU Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management are equipped with the knowledge and skills to be these leaders. Our program offers students the opportunity to explore all phases of the disaster cycle (preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery), with a particular emphasis on creating resilient communities. Our program combines robust coursework with numerous opportunities for hands-on application to ensure graduates are ready to assume this important role as professionals working in government, school and university, healthcare, business, non-profit, and humanitarian settings.
Program Highlights
- In-depth curriculum covering all aspects of disaster resilience and emergency management
- Opportunities to engage in service-learning activities, real-world problem solving, and field simulations
- Support for professional development outside of the classroom including training, conferences, networking, and internships
- Emphasis on building strong relationships between students, faculty, and alumni
- Access to state-of-the-art facilities and technology
Disaster Resilience & Emergency Management Minor
To really enable a community to better address natural and manmade hazards, we need to think broadly. By analyzing the social, political, economic, built, and environmental systems that make up a community, and how these systems relate to each other and the hazards that we face, we can help craft a community that is safer, better, and stronger in the face of danger. Everyone can play a part in creating a disaster resilient community and reducing the impacts of disasters! We will help students interested in the minor to identify where and how they can apply a disaster lens within their chosen field or profession to help build resilience in their communities.
