In order for items to be accepted in the Emily Reynolds Historic Costume Collection, they must fit into one (or more) of three criteria:
We prefer that the item have a documented history, such as who owned the item, where they lived, and where they wore it. Family genealogy, personal stories, and photographs of the item or family are also useful documentation.
Items that are not related to North Dakota history, such as designer pieces or era-specific fashions, provide excellent examples of technique and construction. If such items are in good condition and meet selection criteria, they will be considered. They are often used as teaching and research tools.
The International Dress Collection supports North Dakota State University’s mission of introducing and engaging students, as well as the public, to a global community. Dress is one medium used to express cultural identity or heritage.
