Leading a successful business requires a strong foundational skillset in the fundamentals of business practice. NDSU’s Business Administration degree program offers a broad business knowledge base to ensure you’re ready to enter the workforce successfully.
Alissa Adams, COO of the West Acres Mall, said her business administration degree from NDSU taught her valuable skills, including strategic thinking and working in team settings, both of which she uses every day in her current role.
“My courses at NDSU, from business to Spanish, emphasized the importance of adaptability, collaboration and problem-solving. Through group projects and diverse team experiences, I gained valuable insights into working with different perspectives, which has been invaluable in my career,” said Adams, who graduated in 2009.
In addition to the strong skillset Adams gained, the flexibility of the business administration degree provided her with the chance to pursue topics she was interested in, such as Spanish and entomology. The business administration program includes three credits of 300/400 level electives built into the program, which allow students to pursue their personal or professional interest in certain business domains.
For Adams, the hands-on coursework and her internship during college solidified her NDSU experience.
“While my coursework provided a solid understanding of leadership principles, the real learning came through hands-on experiences, particularly in group projects. These experiences reinforced that leadership isn’t just about a title, it’s about actions, work ethic and the ability to bring people together to achieve a common goal,” she said.
In her role at West Acres, Adams enjoys the fluctuation each day brings as she leads and collaborates across all areas of the business and works with several community aspects from connecting with local organizations to collaborating on partnerships.
“It’s a dynamic, fast-paced role, and I love the energy and variety that each day brings,” she said.
Among her favorite projects over the years include bringing in new stores, such as Von Maur, watching the mall’s marketing approach evolve, promoting a positive work environment and speaking at the 2023 TEDxFargo on the mall’s strong connection to the community.
Adams encourages students interested in a business administration degree at NDSU to embrace the college experience fully.
“Engage with the NDSU community, because one of the greatest things about NDSU is that it’s more than just a university; it’s a community within itself, offering both education and experiences that will shape your future,” she said. Beyond campus, don’t miss out on the incredible opportunities in the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo area. Not only will you receive a top-tier education and make lifelong friendships, but you’ll also have access to a diverse range of businesses and experiences for internships and careers.
“NDSU provides a foundation that can set you up for a lifetime of success. Take advantage of every opportunity, step outside your comfort zone and know that this experience can be the start of something truly amazing.”
