Alfieri, Anastase (b. Mar. 23, 1892, Alexandria, Egypt; d. Mar. 4, 1971, Cairo, Egypt) - Main interest was in the Coleoptera, but produced faunistic work from the Egyptian area, usually with H. Priesner.  Most of his Egyptian Coleoptera collection was placed in the Museum G. Frey, Tutzing, Germany (MGFT), but some Coleoptera and Heterocera has been deposited in the U.S. National Museum, Washington, D.C.  See Howard (1930), Anonymous (1971), Butler (1972), and Stearn (1978) for biographical information.

Amyot, Charles Jean-Baptiste (b. Sept. 23, 1799, Vandeuvre, Aisne, France; d. Oct. 13, 1866, Paris, France) - French. Left as orphan early in life; taken in by Paris businessmen who lived near Audinet-Serville. Most important heteropteran work was Histoire naturelle des insectes Hémipteres (1843) which he co-authored with Serville. He is also notable for the publication of Entomologie Française. Rhynchotes. HémiptPres. HomomptPres. PhthiroptPres. PseudoptPres. Méthode mononymique (1845-1846) which has been placed on the list of rejected works because it is largely mononomial. Maintained no personal collection, but worked with that of Serville and Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris (MNHN). Amyot usually indicated which sexes he had before him when he described a new species, but he did not indicate how many of each sex he had. So, all of his types should be considered STS until LTS can be designated. See Signoret (1866) for bibliography.

Andersen, Nils Mrller (b. ; d. May 12, 2004, Copenhagen) - Worked primarily on the Gerromorpha. Notable publication is The Semiaquatic Bugs (Hemiptera, Gerromorpha). Phylogeny, adaptations, biogeography, and classification (1982). Most of his work was conducted while at the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen (ZMUC).

Antessanty, Louis Gabriel d’ (b. Oct. 24, 1834, Troyes, France; d. January 6, 1922, Troyes, France) - French. Notable publication: Catalogue des HémiptPres-HétéroptPres de l’Aube (1891). Personal collection went to M. Royer (Moret sur Loing), whose collection is now in the Paris Museum (MNHN). See Royer (1922) for information on hemipteran types in Antessanty’s collection. Ashlock, Peter D. (b. Aug. 22, 1929, San Francisco, CA, USA; d. Jan. 26, 1989, Lawrence, KS, USA) - Early influence came from R. L. Usinger, later worked with J. Slater and H. G. Barber. Worked as curator, Bishop Museum (1964-1967); then professor, University of Kansas (1968-1989). Specialized on the Lygaeidae, especially the Orsillinae; also published on systematic methodology. Assmann, August (b. 1819; d. 1898, Breslau) - Main interest was in the Lepidoptera, but did publish an occasional paper on Hemiptera. Collection was placed in the Zool. Univ. Mus., Breslau (UWCP?). See Letzner (1891) for biographical information.

Atkinson, Edwin Felix Thomas (b. Sept. 6, 1840, Tipperary, Ireland; d. Sept. 15, 1890, Calcutta, India) -  Passed into the Indian Civil Service in 1862. Published various non-Entomological works including a Gazatteer of Northwestern India and works on Indian Law. Entomologically, published 2 series on Indian Heteroptera from 1885 to 1890 in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. Also published a catalog on the Miridae [under Capsidae]. Died after a brief illness from Bright’s disease. According to Horn et al. (1990), part of Heteroptera collection went to BMNH, and part went to Dresden via Staudinger & Bang-Haas. Some of Distant’s papers seem to indicate that his collection is in the BMNH. Azam, Joseph (b. 1858; d. 1921) - Son of Charles Azam. Hemiptera collection went to M. Royer (Moret sur Loing) whose collection is now in the MNHN.
