Uhler, Phillip Reese (b. June 3, 1835, Baltimore, MD; d. Oct. 21, 1913, Baltimore, MD) - Considered by many as America’s greatest heteropterist. Educated at Harvard under Louis Agassiz who in 1864 appointed Uhler head of the insect Museum and Library there. Returned to Baltimore in 1867 to become Assistant librarian at the Peabody Library; became head of that library in 1870, and served as provost from 1880 to 1911. Made collecting trips to Haiti and several to the western U.S., and also studied specimens in Europe. Most of collection now resides in USNM, although West Indies types may be in BMNH, and a few specimens may be in CASC. Types were not originally designated, so LT designations are in order for most species. In some cases, Uhler did not really give exact locality data; he gave more or less the distribution of the new species. These general localities (e.g. Western Oregon and Washington Territories, etc.) must be used still as the type localities for the STS. See Kerzhner et al. Usinger, Robert L. (b. Oct. 24, 1912, Fort Bragg, CA, USA; d. Oct. 1, 1968, Berkeley, CA, USA) - North American portions of his collection are deposited in the Essig Museum of Entomology, University of California, Berkeley; exotic specimens were donated by the Essig Museum to the California Academy of Sciences; the primary types that belonged to Usinger were donated to CASC, those that belong to the Essig Museum are on indefinite loan to the CASC.
