Adults
- Post-ocular band is a black patch on
prozona only.
- Not interrupted by pale spots.
- Outer face of hind femur banded.
- Inner face of hind femur yellow,
orange ventrally.
- Hind tibia blue.
- Male cercus a 'turned-in boot.'
- Furculae very short.
- Ovipositor with a dorsal tooth.
- Adults in late Spring and early
summer.
Nymphs
- Eye with conspicuous broad dark
band with pale edges.
- Post-ocular band and lateral crescent
usually reduced to short dashes on prozona.
- Hind femur with interrupted traces of
dark bands.
- Appear earlier in Spring than other
species of Melanoplus.
