As someone who goes above and beyond to share ideas and support others, Trish Strom, assistant professor of practice in the NDSU School of Nursing, is being recognized for her efforts with the Inspiring Colleague Award. Strom received the award at NDSU’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference held in the spring. The award from the NDSU Office of Teaching and Learning recognizes those who help others create effective learning environments.
“Professor Trish Strom goes above and beyond supporting nursing students, program graduates, colleagues, and the healthcare community,” said a nominator in a letter of support. “She is an empowering educator and a board certified health coach….She is often the sounding board for many faculty with problem solving, practicing crucial conversations, advocating for students, and incorporating innovative teaching methods,” said the nominator.
Strom also holds “crucial conversations lunch and learns” at NDSU and is recognized for this work in the region. Her focus emphasizing self-care makes her an advocate to change processes that allow a better school-work-life balance, illustrating Strom’s creativity in generating solutions that are shared across campus.
“She sent out a series of ‘Motivational Monday’ emails with links to community resources and was instrumental in starting a student support group,” according to the nomination letter. “No matter the setting, Trish’s guidance and support results in a ripple effect, impacting those at NDSU and in the broader healthcare community. During her time at NDSU, she has undoubtedly impacted the lives of many students and colleagues through sharing ideas and best practices.”
Strom’s teaching methods are also recognized for making real-world nursing examples accessible to students, providing them with needed tools that help them provide safe and effective care when they graduate.
“Faculty have shared that when confronted with a challenge, they often ask themselves ‘What would Trish do?’ While it is challenging to articulate all that she has done to support the School of Nursing and NDSU as a whole, Trish is extremely deserving of this recognition,” noted the nomination letter.
“I am honored to receive an award for values I admire and strive to embody,” said Strom, who received a $100 NDSU Bookstore gift card as recognition of her dedication to innovation and teaching.
Nominations for the annual Inspiring Colleague Award are accepted March through April each year.
