Math and English Placement
Placement in classes that match your ability and experiences is important to steady degree progress and academic success. Please read about the NDSU math and English placements and follow the instructions provided.
NDSU Math Placement
What is the math placement survey?
- The NDSU math placement survey determines which math course best matches your previous academic experiences.
- The estimated completion time is 2 minutes. You will be asked about previous math classes you have taken (high school and college-level), ACT/SAT scores, and high school GPA.
- NDSU will always accept your highest placement whether it is determined by previously earned credit, NDSU placements, or other approved placement examinations. Additional information is available in the University Catalog.
Who should take the math placement survey?
- All incoming first-year and transfer students must complete the math placement, even if you have college-level math credits.
How to access the required math placement survey:
- Access the math placement survey with your Bison Login.
Math Proficiency Assessment Option
If you believe your placement through the NDSU math placement survey is not a good match of your math ability, you have the option to utilize the NDSU math proficiency assessment. It is an interactive tool that evaluates your current math proficiency. The math proficiency assessment may create a second recommendation based on your responses, and NDSU will always accept your highest placement.
