Dr. Edward Magarian, a former faculty member in the NDSU School of Pharmacy, passed away on November 6, 2021, at the Sanford Hospice House in Fargo, North Dakota. Dr. Magarian received his Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry in 1964, and upon graduation, was a faculty member at the University of Rhode Island and the University of Kentucky.
In 1971, he joined the faculty at North Dakota State University and was a professor in the pharmacy program until he retired in 2005. He was known as an excellent teacher who positively impacted hundreds of pharmacy students at NDSU.
Magarian was voted Teacher of the Year for many years, including his last year of teaching at NDSU in 2005. He also served as faculty advisor for the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Chapter in the School of Pharmacy.
“We are fortunate to have had dedicated faculty such as Ed Magarian to make a difference in the lives of so many pharmacy students,” said Charles D. Peterson, dean of the School of Pharmacy and College of Health Professions.
Dr. Amy Werremeyer, current chair of Pharmacy Practice in the NDSU School of Pharmacy, remembers being taught by Dr. Magarian while she attended pharmacy school at NDSU.
“He was a fantastic teacher–one from whom I learned very much, and maybe more importantly, I still remember what I learned in his class to this day!” said Werremeyer. “Now that I’m a professor of pharmacy myself, I can especially appreciate his teaching methods and his humor and connection with students in the classroom.”
Dr. Magarian also mentored young faculty and developed new programs like the pharmaceutical care program for student pharmacists. Margarian made his mark as an effective teacher and wonderful colleague. He also helped the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences by teaching multiple classes several years after his retirement.
“Being an excellent teacher, I kept requesting him to teach more classes,” said Dr. Jagdish Singh, chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at NDSU. “I fondly remember him saying ‘Jagdish, I am retired.’ Dr. Magarian will be sorely missed and remembered dearly forever in our hearts.”
