The Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) is proud to announce Dr. Lance J. Oyen, Pharm.D., MBA, BCPS, DPLA, FCCP, FCCM, FASHP, as the recipient of the 2025 Hallie Bruce Memorial Lecture Award. Dr. Oyen is a 1992 graduate from the NDSU College of Pharmacy. This prestigious award recognizes an individual of high moral character, good citizenship, and professional excellence who has made significant contributions to the advancement of pharmacy in Minnesota and beyond.
For over six decades, the Hallie Bruce Memorial Lecture Award has stood as the highest honor bestowed by the Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP), recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the profession of pharmacy in Minnesota. Established in 1964, the award pays tribute to Hallie Bruce, a pioneer whose dedication, leadership, and service shaped the foundation of hospital pharmacy practice in the state.
Hallie Bruce devoted more than 40 years to advancing hospital pharmacy in Minnesota, leaving a legacy of professionalism, advocacy, and mentorship. A trailblazer in her time, she worked tirelessly to improve pharmacy practice, foster collaboration among healthcare professionals, and elevate the role of pharmacists in patient care. Her impact extended beyond her own career, as she mentored and inspired future leaders who would continue her mission of excellence in pharmacy.
In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, MSHP established the Hallie Bruce Memorial Lecture Award to honor individuals who embody her spirit of service and leadership. With a distinguished career spanning over 30 years, Dr. Oyen has left an indelible mark on health-system pharmacy through his leadership, scholarship, and advocacy. Currently serving as Chief Pharmacy Officer for Mayo Clinic Midwest, Lance has demonstrated exceptional business acumen and strategic vision, leading pharmacy operations across multiple states and international sites. His commitment to innovation and advancing the profession has been recognized through numerous accolades, including Fellowship status in ASHP, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Beyond his leadership, Lance is a dedicated educator, mentor, and advocate for pharmacy training and professional development. He played a pivotal role in expanding residency programs at Mayo Clinic, developing Mayo’s first Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) PGY2 residency, and contributing as an ASHP accreditation surveyor. His passion for education extends to pharmacy technicians, where he has championed training programs to elevate technician practice and foster collaboration with pharmacists.
As a researcher and scholar, Dr. Oyen has authored over 40 peer-reviewed research articles and presented at more than 35 national and local meetings. He is a sought-after thought leader, serving as a journal reviewer for eight prominent pharmacy and medical publications. His influence in clinical practice expansion and innovation has established Mayo Clinic as a national model, with colleagues across the country looking to his leadership for guidance.
Lance’s dedication to pharmacy professional organizations is unwavering. As an active member and past president of the Southern Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a Minnesota delegate to the ASHP House of Delegates, and a key leader in the Minnesota Pharmacy Alliance, he has helped shape policy and practice across the state. Appointed by ASHP, he represented MN and ASHP on the 2023 Well-being and Workforce Summit resulting in important solutions jointly endorsed by APhA, NABP and ASHP. His advocacy work has been instrumental in modernizing regulations around telehealth and technician practice, ensuring that pharmacists can provide care in evolving healthcare settings.
