The Emerald Ash Borer was first confirmed in the United States in June 2002 in Michigan and since then has spread to fifteen states and into Canada. Dnr.state.mn.us states that the adults lay their eggs in the bark of the Ash tree, and then the Larvae burrow into the bark after hatching and consume the cambium and phloem, effectively girdling the tree and causing death within two years. Emeraldashborer.info states that the Emerald Ash Borer has killed at least 50 - 100 million ash trees so far and threatens to kill most of the ash trees throughout North America.
