History of The ChiaPet
The ChiaPet believe it or not had some uses before it became a pet for a lonely dweller living in a apartment that doesn't allow animals. Chia is the common names of 12 or more species of saliva. This as you might have predicted caused confusion. The scientfic name that is listed on the box is Saliva columbariae. . However, the species grown on the chia Pet is Salvia hispanica .
The Chia was a major food for the aztecs and Indians. They roasted the seeds, mixed them with water and eaten them as gruel or ground into baking. The Aztecs also used Chia for Oil face painting and as ointment and emoilent. The Chia is still used by hikers today as energy because it has the same stimulants as caffeine. They used the Chia seeds to mix with fruit juices to make refreshing drinks.
Seed Structure Of the Chia Pet
The small oval seeds of the chia are molted and look like little dinosaur eggs. The seed color is dark grey with black molting. ChiaPets are used for chiapets because of thier unusual seed coat which becomes sticky when wet.

Chia has some potentially impotant Economic food uses. Its an impotant oilseed crop because its seeds are very high in unsaturated Omega-3-fatty acids, which are essential for a healthy diet. The meal after exctracting seed oil is so high in protein it can be fed to cattle. Chia seed Oil also contains large amounts of natural antioxidants, Which prevent spoilage and benefical to human health.
