Elements of Floral Design

By Lori Dicks

When are going to make an arrangement many elements must be taken into consideration. I myself have worked in a flower shop and understand that an arrangement just can't be thrown together. Tought and the elements of design must all be put into effect. The five elements of design are line, color, form, space and texture. I will discuss each element and what the importance of each element is.

The first element I will discuss is line. Line provides many things for a design, it provides the shape and the structure. The line also allows a path to exist for the person looking at the arrangement. Designers can use different techniques to create their lines.

The second element that is important in design is the use of color. Color is perhaps the most important element out of all the elements because that is what most people notice.
The best way to choose colors for an arrangement is to use a color
wheel.

The third element is form. Form includes three things height, width and depth. It is important to think about form while placing flowers because this is what determines the form.

The fourth element is space, spacing of flowers give the viewer a chance to view each individual flower.

The fifth element is texture. Texture gives the arrangement intrest and diversity. Allowing viewer to notice different flowers.

I hope you have learned a little bit about the elements. Now you can make your own arrangement.
