My hopes with this webpage are to inform you, the reader about the plant hardiness zones in North America, specifically the zones in and around North Dakota . Also, to introduce different species of plants which are zone hardy to North Dakota .
One of the most important, if not the most important thing to consider when determining what horticulture plants you can grow in your garden, is whether or not they will survive in North Dakota. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plant hardiness zone map may help you determine what will grow. It takes into consideration the average minimum winter conditions for a period of over 60 years.
There are eleven different zones starting with Zone 1, where the minimum winter temperature may get BELOW 50 degrees Fahrenheit; ranging to Zone 11 where lows don't often drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Zone 11 would include places like Hawaii and the southern most tip of Florida . This information was gathered from the United States National Arboretum, and also the Garden Helper webpage's. All webpage addresses are located at the bottom of this site.
North Dakota is considered to be in the North-Midwest area of the United States . Zones included in this area are: 2b-6a. Most of North Dakota is in Zone 3b; however the Red River Valley and Fargo are in Zone 4a. Zone 4a's minimum winter temperature is between 25-30 degrees below zero. To the right is a table of all of the zones and their minimum temperatures to sustain growth. |

I know that it may disappoint some that you are unable to grow palm trees in your backyard, however there are some other very beautiful shrubbery and trees that will stand the test of time (or in our case temperature) just fine.
