What is seashore paspalum? Seashore Paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum) is a subtropical grass that has been being used more frequently in the turfgrass industry. In the United States it is native along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and also along the California coast. What sets this turfgrass apart is its ability to withstand very saline soils.

Where have I seen seashore paspalum? In 2001 Luke Jenkins, Heads Grounds Professional for the Houston Astros, changed the turf in the newly built Minute Maid Park to SeaIsle 1 seashore paspalum. This is the first time seashore paspalum has been used on a Major League Baseball field. Seashore paspalum is found on some golf courses in the southern United States and in South America.
