How do I care for seashore paspalum?

Paspalum, like all other turfgrasses need to be properly cared for to look their best.

Fertilization- Small doses regularly throughout growing season. Nitrogen and Potassium are the main nutrients that are needed for proper growth. Both nutrients are greatly needed and the ratios of nitrogen to potassium should be 1:1 or even 1:2 in high stressed areas.

Mowing- Scalping is a major problem for seashore paspalum. Proper mowing techniques and practices are important to avoid scalping. Optimal mowing frequency for a home lawn is more than once a week. Turfgrass areas such as golf courses or athletic fields should be mowed daily.

Mower Type- Rotary mowers can be used at heights of 1.5 to 2 inches. However the use of a reel mower will produce a better looking lawn

Irrigation- Irrigate paspalum the same as you would any other turfgrass. Signs of stress should be visible before irrigation.

Herbicide Use- Herbicide use on seashore paspalum is different than most other grasses. Many of the herbicides on the market will injure seashore paspalum. Other herbicides may not be leagally used on seashore paspalum. make sure to check the product information before applying herbicide to the paspalum.

Establishing the Turf- Seashore Paspulm can be established by sodding or by plugs. Sodding is more expensive but is recommended when immediate cover is desired, for aesthetic reasons, or to prevent soil erosion.
