Maclurites
an
archaeogastropod with a hyperstrophic shell

the Ordovician-aged Galena Group, Minnesota
PURPOSE
-
The
purpose of the course is to investigate the lower to middle Paleozoic stratigraphy
-
and
paleontology of the of the Upper Midwest . Geological sections will be
examined in
-
the
St. Croix and Mississippi River Valleys in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and
in quarries
-
and
road cuts in southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa. The trip will begin
at the
-
unconformity
between Proterozoic volcanic rocks and Cambrian strata. This will be followed
-
by
examination of progressively younger Ordovician and finally Devonian strata.
There will
-
be
discussions of stratigraphy, paleontology, paleoecology and paleogeography
at each of
-
the
stops after fossil collecting.
