Here we have a more subtle clue as to the nature of a giant lake bed. The lake drained, and small rivers formed which lead the water to the center of the valley.

As you can see, this is a high point on an otherwise very flat surface. The heavier sands and gravel of the river which once ran here did not compact as much as the softer sediments surrounding it. The sand and gravel which make the ridge also create an excellent storage place for water. In looking around, you will see farm after farm sitting right on top of the ridge because of this.
