After each date below you'll see possible reading assignments in CTW (Call to Write), RB (Rule of the Bone), a handout, or a printout. These are to be read for the date after which they appear. Material in parentheses is tentative class activities.
Attendance, active participation, and attention to reading assignments are vital. If you miss a class, read our Homepage instructions for full information and policies. Please remember that absences will affect your understanding of course content, and no amount of make-up work can replace regular attendance. - Be sure you've read over our
course info page—you need to know all of this info!- Read and bring to class a hard or electronic copy of "Letter from Birmingham Jail."
- Note 2 instances of real argument in your life this week. Come prepared to tell us about them.
- Be sure you've completed your diagnostic essay assigned last Thurs. the 10th.

- Begin discussion of argument: the elements of argument, and the structure of classical argument.
- Rhetorical analysis of King.

Before Class
- Read Chap. 2 of Call to Write, "Understanding the Rhetorical Situation," p. 25-47.
- Read Call to Write, Chap. 3, "Persuasion and Responsibility: Analyzing Arguments," pp. 49-top of p. 72, focusing especially on the 3 main types of issues (pp. 57-59) and the parts of an argument (pp. 66-74).
In Class
- Review Tuesday's class.
- Look at excerpts from your diagnostic letters.
