Cool Websites for English Majors

Welcome to the North Dakota Governor's School program in English Studies.

During your six-week stay, you will gain an intensive overview of the many disciplines within English Studies, including some cutting-edge electronic and Web explorations. You will work intensively on a project of your choosing, produce and publish in your own online magazines, and complete a final Portfolio for later use in your life.

And: you will have what we hope will be a challenging, inspirational, and uncommon experience in English.

Activities & Schedule Overview

Each day, following your morning Life and Leadership period, you will get a crash course in some facet of English Studies. You'll hear lectures, participate in group discussions, write independently as well as collaboratively, perform thinking and writing exercises, and venture out and around campus. Ultimately, you will complete an Independent Project and Portfolio, publish your own magazines, and present some of your original work to the larger Governor's School community and even the nation (see the Fargo Hall of the National Gallery of Writing on the National Council for Teachers of English website)

Rooms We Will Use

E. Morrow Lebedeff (EML) 370 (most days)

We will occasionally be in Lib 14A, Ehly 119, Jitters, or the Coffee Shop at the Memorial Union. (Note: you must have an instructor or counselor accompanying you across 12th Ave. to Jitters.)

9:30-10:00: Laptop count. Getting acquainted: "Four Truths and a Lie."

10-11:30: Introduction to our program and what is English Studies?

11:30-12:00: Reading and Reflection.

12:00-12:40: Tour of campus and Engl. department. Library tutorial.

Tues., June 7: Tour of the Disciplines: Creative Writing Studies

9:30-11:00─What Is This Stuff?

11:00-12:00─CW Minor Project #1: “Lucky Dollar.”

1:00-2:00─Workshop.

2:00-4:00─ Reading as Writers

Wed., June 8: Tour of the Disciplines: Creative Writing Studies

9:30-11:00—CW Minor Project #2: “Form in Fiction.”

11:00-12:00—Speaker.

1:00-2:00— Continue work on exercise.

2:00-4:00—Workshop. Visit college Creative Writing class.

10:15 -12:00— CW Minor Project #3: “The Luminous Object.”
