Class Library (Readings and Resources) Hiatus (A Journal of Creative Writing by Students of the NDSU Governor's School) |
---|
This segment of your Governor's School experience is a writer's workshop, dedicated to creative uses of language through fiction and poetry. We'll devote four weeks to prose, and two weeks to poetry, and everyone will submit work for our class e-journal, Hiatus. Class activities will include discussion of occasional readings (stories and poems available on the Internet or as handouts), workshopping of each other's drafts, and a variety of in-class exercises and prompts to help you get writing.
At the public reception and closing exercises at the end of your six weeks, you will read a selection of your work for the audience. A flier for Hiatus, our online magazine featuring work by the whole class, will be printed up and distributed to all of the Governor's School participants and families as well.
The aims of the class are:
1) to try your hand at new creative work and explore your own personal centers of interest;
2) to better understand the creative process;
4) to produce a good selection of work for our online journal and for reading to a large audience of friends and family.
Materials
Please bring to each meeting a pen and a binder or notebook with loose-leaf paper and pockets.
Have handy, if at all possible, a memory key or jump drive, or a RW CD.
Have an available email account.
Other materials for the course
are available by clicking Here.
Requirements
Each student will:
1) submit at least one draft for workshop critique by the group;
2) read a selection of their work for the closing exercises ceremony;
3) submit the following minimum items for our class e-journal, Hiatus:
- one of the Prose Project options (CLICK HERE FOR PROSE PROJECT ASSIGNMENT)
- four complete and polished poems (CLICK HERE FOR POETRY ASSIGNMENT)
(Note: these requirements are open to negotiation. If you'd rather do several poems and no short story, for instance, or a creative nonfiction piece instead of poems, etc. etc.—we can work that out.)
Whenever you've been scheduled for a workshop critique, or whenever you're ready to have one of your own pieces discussed in class, email it as a Word attachment to your instructor and your classmates. Everyone who RECEIVES a workshop piece should print it out, read it, and bring to class for discussion.
YOU WILL ALSO BE EXPECTED TO:
keep in close touch with your classmates and me through email throughout the six weeks;
read any assigned poems or stories and be prepared to discuss them in class;
complete possible short exercises (some open and some structured);
participate actively in group discussion of your classmates' work.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail John or Cindy at Cindy.Nichols@ndsu.edu.
