A Key to the superfamilies of the Lepidoptera
with special reference to North and South Dakota


 

10g (10f).  Wings lanceolate, hind tibiae with stiffened bristles.  Superfamily Epermenioidea 

 

Family Epermeniidae have black scale tufts along the inner margin of the fws, head smooth scaled, hind tibiae with bristle-like scales, ocelli are absent.  There are 83 species world wide, 11 species in 3 genera occur in North America. 


 

 

Ochromolopis ramapoella (Kearfott).

 

10g'  Wings broader, hind tibiae with long loose hair.  Superfamily Copromorphoidea.

The two doubtfully distinct families of Copromorphoidea are separated below.

Family Copromorphidae.  Ocelli present, fws with at least one stalked vein from discal cell, hws with 3 medius veins reaching outer margin.  More than 40 species world wide, 5 in North America. 


 

 

cf Lotisma trigonana (Walsingham)
 

Family Carposinidae.  Ocelli absent, fws with all veins arising from discal cell, hws with at least one medius vein missing.  World wide more than 270 species, 11 species and 3 genera in North America.
