A Key to the superfamilies of the Lepidoptera
with special reference to North and South Dakota


 

12(11').  Forewing length (smallest males) > 15 mm, moths usually much larger. Fws with accessory cell and media stem present in discal cell. Proboscis lobe-like, hidden between labial palpi.  Abdomen extends beyond hws in our species. Superfamily Cossoidea

 

Family Cossidae, Carpenter moths, Goat moths.  Many species give of a turpentine like odor.  World wide there are about 670 species arrayed in 6 subfamilies and 213 genera. The North American fauna is represented by 4 subfamilies, 14 genera and 47 species.
