A Key to the superfamilies of the Lepidoptera
with special reference to North and South Dakota


 

13a (13).  F/Hw with similar patterns and translucent 'windows.'  Fw with vein 1A and 2A 'forked' at base.  Superfamily Thyridoidea.  

 

Family Thyrididae, Window-winged moths,  contain about 1,200 known species (fewer than 800 described), 12 species occur in North America.  One species has been recorded from North Dakota.

13a'  F/Hw dissimilar in pattern, fw cryptic, hw brightly colored.  Fw with 2A 'free' and angled toward inner margin.  Superfamily Hyblaeoidea.

 

Family Hyblaeidae contains 18 species in two genera, of which 17 naturally occur in the Old World and one in the New World. A second Old World species has been introduced to this hemisphere and occurs in southern Florida.
