A Key to the superfamilies of the Lepidoptera
with special reference to North and South Dakota


 

15 (14').  Hw with veins Sc and R parallel for length of discal cell or forming a basal areole as long as discal cell.  Fw venation trifid or quadrifid.  Superfamily Drepanoidea

Family Drepanidae, Hook-tip moths include 650 species world wide and 20 in North America.  Three of the seven species from the northern Great Plains have the combination of falcate fws and M2 present on the evenly rounded hw; three species have quadrifid fw venation (note presence of abdominal tympanum) and one pure white species has lamellate antennae.

15'  Hw with veins Sc and R closely approximate at wing base and then divergent or divergent from wing base and lacking basal areole.  Fw venation trifid.  Superfamily Geometroidea.
