Identification key to the Noctuinae occurring in the Dakotas

 

C3.  (C1)  Fw triangular, rfw 12-14 mm.*, reniform spot narrow, fuscous. 
        Male antennae weakly moniliform.     Abagrotis  trigona (Smith).

             
 

C3.'  Fw elongate, rfw 13-16 mm*, reniform and orbicular spots ocellate, usually faint,
        often obsolescent.  Male antennae filiform.     Abagrotis nefascia (Smith).*

    

C3."  Fw elongate, rfw 15-19 mm*, reniform spot broader, fuscous in lower half. 
        Male antennae filiform     Abagrotis orbis (Grote).
 

    

 

*Larger specimens are usually females such that overlapping sizes are then specimens of differing sexes.
