Identification key to the Noctuinae occurring in the Dakotas

 

D6.  (D4)   Orbicular spot large, ocellate, overall fw ground color usually dark. 
        Ptagiae concolorous with tegulae.     Abagrotis reedi Buckett.

         
           

D6.'  Orbicular spot small round, with pale outline only, fw groundcolor usually not dark. 
        Ptagiae paler than tegulae or with pale posterior edge.     Abagrotis duanca (Smith).

         

 

D6." Ordinary spots, obscure with pale outline or absent, fw groundcolor variable,
        often with darker basal and pm areas.  Ptagiae concolorous or paler than tegulae,
        never with a pale posterior edge.     Abagrotis brunneipennis (Grote).

         

*Note: image at left is a highly modified fw of A. cupida, appearing as brighter, less contrasting morph of A. brunneipennis.
