Sphingidae: Sphinginae


Sphinx drupiferarum J. E. Smith 1797

Common name: Wild cherry sphinx.

Hodges #: 7812.

Identification: Rfw 42.3 mm, fw charcoal black to dark brown, discal cell and costa marked with white, apical dash without white scales.  Hw outer margin pale before fringe.

Similar species: 7803, 7810, 7811.

Distribution: temperate United States to southern Canada.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Prunus sp.-- wild cherry, plum, Malus sp.-- apple, Syringa vulgare Linnaeus-- lilac, and Celtis occidentalis L.-- hackberry.

Note: closely related to Sphinx ligustri L. of Eurasia.
