Sphingidae: Macroglossinae: Dilophonitini


Erinnyis ello (Linnaeus 1758)

Common name: Ello sphinx.

Hodges #: 7834.

Identification: Rfw 41.2 mm (male), fw outer margin convex in general course and shallowly crenulate between veins.  Fw  (male) with diagonal stripe, (female) uniform gray.   Abdomen of both sexes with dark lateral rectangles.

Similar species: 7837.

Distribution: Argentina to southern Canada, records north of the Gulf states are strays.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Psidium spp.-- guava and Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.-- poinsettia, both in the Euphorbiaceae.  Also reported from Sapotaceae-- sapodilla or southern buckthorn.
