Stiria rugifrons Grote 1874

Common name: listed here as ‘Yellow sunflower moth.’

Hodges #: 9785.

Identification: Rfw 18 mm, ground color yellow with dark markings present on outer and inner margins of fw, foretibia with massive apical ‘claw.’

Similar species: none in North Dakota.

Distribution: Saskatchewan southeastward to Virginia, southward to Florida and northern Texas.

Hosts: Larvae feed on heads of Helianthus spp.– sunflowers, usually in disturbed habitats.
