Weight exemption permits offered
As a result of stressed harvest conditions in areas of the state the North Dakota Highway Patrol reminds haulers of farm products that they may purchase 10 percent wieght exemption permits, which allow a vehicle to carry 10 percent more weight than it can otherwise legally carry, and may be beneficial to assist in expediting harvest of agricultural products. The weight exemption is only valid while hauling farm products from the field to the initial point of storage with the exception of sugar beets and potatoes. They may be transported to and from any location.
The fee for permit is $50 per truck for each 30-day peroid. The following restrictions apply: Federal law does not allow the 10 percent extra weight on any part of the interstate system, the permit is not valid on a county or local road unless those respective jurisdictions give approval, and the truck must be registered for the maximum legal gross vehicle weight.
The permits can easily be purchased on line at the North Dakota Highway Patrol web site at www.discovernd.com/ndhp and click Permits. the permits can also be purchased by contacting the Highway Patrol permit section at 328-2621 or by contacting your nearest Highway Patrol district office or weigh/inspection station. Motorists need to remember that there will be many trucks operating on the roadways during this harvest season. Loaded trucks take a longer distance to stop and are often traveling at speeds much slower than passenger vehicles. Please drive carefully!
