Final exam review (2009)

Exam will cover everything beginning with Syllabus Week Nine, basically, including class web site readings 14-18, lectures, and in-class exercises.

• Topics: working with illustrations, cutlines, page dummying, page layout, typography, computerized pagination (InDesign). About 30 multiple choice questions.
• Three or four multiple choice questions from the midterm exam.
• Five sentences from the midterm copy editing section. Note: This is the third time you've seen these, so you'll get them all correct this time, right? (Study that exam!)

Part two: InDesign exercise. Exercise will be similar to flyer exercise, will ask you to place copy, draw a border, change text and headline style, make a reverse, possibly will include other items.

Below are questions referring to specific topics covered in the exam (some of these may or may not be actual questions from the exam):

1. Name two aspects required for mass media style cutlines.

2. You have a photo that you need to fit two columns, or 25 picas. Using Photoshop, generally list the steps you would take to proportion a photo to fit that space.

3. What does “dummying” mean as it relates to editing?

4. Type terminology: What does baseline mean? What are ascenders and descenders? What is a serif? What is x-height?

5. How many picas in an inch?

6. Explain the difference between horizontal and vertical layout.

7. What is “modular” style layout?

8. What is a “grid” in editing?

9. Most common grid for broadsheet newspapers is…?

10. What is the difference between broadsheet size, tabloid size, and basic (magazine) size?

11. What is a "text frame" as it relates to InDesign pagination software?

12. What is a reverse as it relates to publication design?

13. What is a screen as it relates to publication design?

14. What do editors call the amount of space between each line of type?

15. Why do editors generally to avoid publishing “grip and grin” photos?

16. An advertisement is listed as 2 X 4. What does this mean? How many column inches will the advertiser pay for?

17. What is the difference between roman typefaces and Egyptian typefaces? Between blackletter and script?

18. Explain resolution as it affects digitalized photographs.

19. For magazines, what is generally the minimum resolution necessary for acceptable photo reproduction?
