COMM 313: Headline-writing exercise one
Write a 1-18-3 above each of these short stories (One column, 18 point, three line). Use the computer's broadsheet hed size calculator to fit or, if you don't have the software available, count using the unit count method and hed sked. Note that the hed sked indicates a one col, 18 pt hed can be a maximum of 20 and one-half units. (That's Univers medium, a common san serif typeface.)
Note: as you are now the headline writer, someone else has copy edited the stories, so no need for you to. Read the stories on screen, and type the headlines on a separate sheet, identifying each by "slug" line (brief name used by editors to track stories). Be sure to indicate breaks for each line of the three-line heds. Submit for grading only slugs, size of head (all 1-18-3 in this case), and headline. Submit headlines only for grading; don't print stories.
