Strachiini Mulsant & Rey

Strachiaires Mulsant & Rey, 1866: 189, 196-197.
Eurydemaria Distant, 1902: 187-188. (syn. by Oshanin, 1906)
Trochiscocoraria Oshanin, 1906: 139. (syn. by Asanova & Kerzhner, 1969)

Diagnosis: Ostiole reduced to small opening, no attending structure (ruga, carina, etc.); evaporative area reduced to small finger-like area posterior to ostiolar opening, and a narrow band running along anterior margin of metapleuron.  Parameres thin, needle-like, sickle-shaped.  First rostral segment usually clearly extending beyond posterior apex of bucculae.  Antennifers somewhat swollen, easily visible from above.  Basal abdominal venter unarmed.  Mesosternum usually carinate, metasternum flat.

Included genera:
Afrania Stål, 1865
Afraniella Schouteden, 1904
Bagrada Stål, 1862
Capnoda Jakovlev, 1887
Compsoprepes Stål, 1867
Eurydema Laporte, 1833
Grossiana Ahmad & Khan, 1980
Madates Strand, 1910
Murgantia Stål, 1862
Pylophora Van Duzee, 1923
Stenozygum Fieber, 1861
Strachia Hahn, 1833

Comments: Trochiscocoris does not belong in Strachiini; I am unsure of its proper placement.  Seansonius does not belong in Strachiini, but rather belongs in Antestiini.  Pylophora does belong in Strachiini.  Murgantia histrionica is probably not congeneric with the rest of MurgantiaStenozygum varium is not congeneric with rest of StenozygumStenozygum seems to be a conglomeration of species which may eventually require the erection of several new genera.

Key to the Genera of the Tribe Strachiini

1      Anterolateral pronotal margins strongly and angulately concave; mesosternum flat, lacking medial carina

Strachia Hahn

-       Anterolateral pronotal margins straight or only weakly concave; mesosternum carinate medially

2

2(1)  Hind femora each armed with a stout pre-apical spine on inferior surface; second and third abdominal sternites fused or partially fused

Compsoprepes Stål

-       All femora unarmed; second and third abdominal sternites separated by distinct suture

3

3(2)   Scutellum spatulate in shape; elongate, only slightly shorter than coria; apex broadly rounded

Afrania Stål

-        Scutellum sharply triangular, distinctly shorter than coria; apex narrowly rounded

4

4(3)   Dorsal surface of head strongly and coarsely punctate

5

-        Dorsal surface of head impunctate or with at most a few sparse and weak punctures on vertex

6

5(4)   Juga curving over apex of tylus, contiguous apically; anterior margin of pronotum elevated, collar-like

Eurydema Laporte

-        Juga not contiguous apically; anterior margin of pronotum not elevated or collar-like

Capnoda Jakovlev

6(4)   Anterior margin of pronotum not separated from rest of pronotum by sulcus or row of punctures, collar vague at best, not elevated

7

-        Anterior margin of pronotum separated from rest of pronotum by sulcus or row of punctures, forming an elevated collar, at least medially

10

7(6)   Juga convergent over apex of tylus, apically contiguous or nearly so (Old World)

8

-       Juga not convergent over apex of tylus, widely separated apically (New World)

9

8(7)   Smaller, depressed species; dorsum of head nearly impunctate; punctures on rest of body shallow, fine

Bagrada Stål

-        Larger, robust species; dorsum of head with punctures at least on vertex; punctures on rest of body deep, coarse

"Stenozygum" varium

9(7)   Dorsal surface of pronotum impunctate except for row of punctures separating anterior and posterior disks, and perhaps a few punctures near anterior margin

Murgantia Stål (except histrionica)

-        Dorsal surface of pronotum distinctly punctate over most of surface

Pylophora Van Duzee

10(6)  Anterolateral pronotal margins reflexed for entire length, curving and overlapping lateral margins of pronotal collar; head triangular, lateral margins nearly straight, apex narrowly rounded

Madates Strand

-        Anterolateral pronotal margins reflexed for some or all of length, but not overlapping lateral margins of pronotal collar (may be continuous with collar); head variable, but often with lateral margins sinuous, apex more broadly rounded

11

11(10) Anterior and posterior disks of pronotum separated by transverse sulcus or row of coarse punctures, pronotal calli thus appearing inflated (Old World)

12

-         Anterior and posterior disks of pronotum not separated, calli not appearing inflated (New World)

"Murgantia" histrionica

12(11) Vertex of head with a few sparse punctures Afraniella Schouteden
-          Vertex of head impunctate 13

13(12) Pronotal collar distinct only medially, laterally becoming confluent with pronotal disk

Grossiana Ahmad & Khan

-         Pronotal collar distinct along entire margin

Stenozygum Fieber
