Gellia Stål, 1865
(updated 20 April 2005)

Gellia Stål, 1865: 234, 243.

Type Species: Aelia albivittis Germar, 1838, by subsequent designation (Kirkaldy, 1909).

Tribal Placement: Linnavuori (1982) included this genus in his Lobopeltista group, but Ahmad & Kamaludding (1990) included it in the Tetrodini.

Included Species:

albivittis (Germar)
angulicollis (Stål)
bicolorata Distant
dilatata (Signoret)
fusca Ahmad & Kamaluddin
incognita Distant
kuntiae Mathew
monticola Linnavuori
neavei Schouteden
nigripennis (Dallas)
pakistanica Ahmad & Kamaluddin
pilosa Linnvuori
punctulata Stål
rugulosa Distant
tristis Schouteden

Comments: Linnavuori (1982) provided a key to the African species, but did not included bicolorata Distant from the Congo, or incognita Distant from an unknown locality.  Ahmad & Kamaluddin (1990) provided a key to the Indo-Pakistan species, but did not include kuntiae Mathew from India.

Key to African Species (Modified from Linnavuori 1982)

1      Dorsal surface with whitish scale-like hairs; anterolateral lobes of pronotum rectangular or roundly bluntly angular; mesosternum not concave (rugulosa species group)

2

-       Dorsal surface without scale-like hairs; anterolateral angles of pronotum distinctly produced apicad (faintly so in pilosa); mesosternum concave (dilatata species group)

3

2(1)  Length 18-19 mm; body elongate, nearly parallel-sided; blackish brown; costal margin with longitudinal band of dense whitish tomentum; membrane grayish hyaline, veins concolorous; anterolateral pronotal lobes rounded; disk finely punctate, only slightly rugose

albivittis (Germar)

-       Length 14-17 mm; body broader; dark reddish brown; membrane pale brownish, veins blackish; anterolateral lobes of pronotum sharp; disk with numerous shiny pimple-like elevations

rugulosa Distant

3(1)   Hair covering of dorsal surface long, semierect, dense

pilosa Linnavuori

-        Hair covering inconspicuous

4

4(3)   Puncturing on dorsal surface, including head, coarse and dense

angulicollis Stål

-        Puncturing on dorsal surface, especially on head, fine

5

5(4)   Color yellowish or reddish brown

6

-        Color blackish

7

6(5)   Larger, length 15-16 mm; pale ochraceous; ventral surface with only indistinct infuscations; puncturing finer, on venter indistinct; second antennal segment distinctly shorter than third; ventral margin of pygofer thicker, median notch deeper and broader

punctulata Stål

-       Smaller, length 11.75-15 mm; darker, yellowish or reddish brown; ventral surface, and femora, with dark irroration; venter with dark patches and distinct puncturing; second antennal segment usually nearly as long as third; ventral margin of pygofer thinner, median notch smaller

neavei Schouteden

7(5)  Scutellum elongate, only moderately tapering apicad; second and third antenal segments fused

monticola Linnavuori

-       Scutellum distinctly tapering apicad, broadly triangular; second and third antennal segments not fused

8

8(7)  Robust, length 14.5 mm; antennae very short, total length of antennae 1.3 times as long as the width of the head across the eyes

dilatata (Signoret)

-       Smaller, length 12.0-13.2 mm; antennae longer, total length of antennae 1.5-1.64 times as long as the width of the head across the eyes

tristis Schouteden

Key to Indo-Pakistan Species (modified from Ahmad & Kamaluddin, 1990)

1      Length of head distinctly less than length of pronotum, length of head and pronotum together distinctly shorter than 1.5 times length of pronotum

2

-       Length of head greater than length of pronotum; length of head and pronotum together distinctly longer than 1.5 times length of pronotum

3

2(1)  Pronotum with short posterior lobes; scutellum with longer apical lobe; rostrum reaching posterior margin of fore-coxae; metathoracic scent gland ostioles with peritreme very short, lobe-like

nigripennis (Dallas)

-       Pronotum without posterior lobes; scutellum with apical lobe markedly shorter and much narrowed; rostrum reaching anterior margin of fore-coxae; metathoracic scent gland ostioles with peritreme large, somewhat blade-like

albivittis (Germar)

3(2)  Anteocular distance slightly longer than 1.5 times length posterior of head including eyes; in males, posterior margin of paramere convex; in females, basal plates contiguous, apically convex

pakistanica Ahmad & Kamaluddin

-       Anteocular distance about equal or slightly shorter than 1.5 times length of head including eyes; in males, posterior margin of paramere sinuate; in females, basal plates separated mesially, sinuate apically

fusca Ahmad & Kamaluddin
