PROPOSED ITINERARY

PRELIMINARY ITINERARY (subject to change):

Day 1: Friday March 8

  • Depart Fargo at 9:05 am UA 6003 to arrive Kona at 8:53 pm
  • Pick up vehicles and supplies
  • Drive to and camp at Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park (confirmed and paid)

Day 2: Saturday March 9

  • Kohala and Pololu Valley.
  • Hike down to observe deep volcanic soil profiles, submarine landslide scarps, tsunami deposits and possible evidence for spring sapping
  • After lunch, drive south to Waimea, then south to an 1800 lava flow from Hualalai Volcano, observing xenolith-rich lava ramparts
  • Lava tube in the 1801 Huehue flow
  • Camp at Ho'okena Beach (confirmed and paid)

Day 3: Sunday March 10

  • South Point - famous green sand beach next to a classic littoral cone
  • Kohala ash, fossil root structures and development of soil profiles
  • Continue around the south of the Island
  • Camp at Punalu'u county Beach Park (confirmed and paid)

Day 4: Monday March 11

  • Volcanoes National Park
  • Halemaumau Crater, Thurston Lava Tube, pit craters, tree molds, reticulite and Pele's Hair
  • Stay at Namakani Paio Cabins (same site for 3 nights) (confirmed and paid)

Day 5: Tuesday March 12

  • Continue exploration of the Park geology
  • Chain of Craters Road
  • Stay at Namakani Paio Cabins

Day 6: Wednesday March 13

Day 7: Thursday March 14

  • Leave Volcanoes National Park
  • Akaka Falls
  • Camping again at Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park (confirmed and paid)

Day 8: Friday March 15

  • Possibly time for sand studies at Hapuna Beach
  • Depart Kona UA 344 at 9:00 pm

Day 9: Saturday March 16

  • Arrive Fargo UA 6084 at 4:17 pm
