_____ Appropriate clothing; lightweight; clothing to wear as layers -- shirts, sweaters -- and pants,
skirts, shorts, underwear (washable), sleep wear, etc. Italians dress well and are not sloppy.
Lightweight pants or jeans are good, and shorts will be acceptable in many places but not
churches. Women may wish to bring sun dresses. Wrinkle free clothing works well when
living out of a suitcase. Etna has been active recently, so you may wish to have field clothes
for the day of our visit.
_____ One nicer outfit, nothing fancy, for an evening out if you wish
_____ Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots that are broken in. We will be walking in the cities
and hiking on the volcanoes, so you will need something comfortable. You may wish to
bring a pair of sandals or a second pair of shoes to change into at the end of the day.
_____ Light jacket and/or sweater
_____ A couple of pencils, a pen, and a notebook for journal/field notes
_____ A hip pack is often convenient, but wear it on your front, not your hip or fanny
_____ Personal toiletries; deodorant, tooth paste and brush; soap; baby powder can help keep you dry
(small container); nail clippers; contact solutions; etc.
_____ Medicines, all with prescription labels clearly visible;Immodium or Pepto-bismol
_____ Sun screen and possibly sun burn lotion (if you burn easily) and a hat for sun protection
_____ Sun glasses; a cord that allows the glasses to hang around your neck is convenient
_____ A swimming suit; some of the hotels have pools
_____ Light rain poncho and/or small umbrella<
_____ Camera and film (slides are recommended, ASA 200, though you may want some 400 for night or
indoor shots). Bring your film in your carry-on, not in your suitcase, to protect against the
new high-intensity airport X-ray machines that screen luggage
_____ A few ziplock plastic storage bags always seem to come in handy (e.g., good for camera if it is
raining; or for a wet wash cloth)
_____ One or two large plastic bags for dirty clothes and in case you need to keep some things dry
_____ Towel/wash cloth<
_____ Camping knife/fork/spoon, Swiss army knife, leatherman, or other implement, but do not pack in
carry-on; the same holds for scissors or other sharp implements (these could be seized at the airport)
_____ A roll of toilet paper will be useful, also Kleenex packets and handiwipes
_____ One or two books to read, just keep the weight down
_____ Only bring electric appliances if you have a converter and plug, or if you have an appliance (i.e.
hair dryer) with dual voltage
_____ A small flash light might be useful, though not essential
_____ International Student card might be desirable for those staying on after the course
