wish to stay an additional week, with departure from Milan, but any other deviation will
require separate arrangements by the student.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:There are four broad course objectives: (1) to provide an
outline of Greco-Roman prehistory; (2) to provide an understanding of volcanism and
the potential impact of geologic processes on humans; (3) to expose students to the
challenging and intriguing processes of archaeological and geological inquiry; and (4) to
provide students with an experiential understanding of a culture much different from our
own, and thus enhance international awareness.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATIONS:There is no textbook for the course,
but students will be expected to read articles on volcanism and on Greco-Roman
archaeology in preparation for a field presentation. Students wishing an expanded
reading list should contact the instructors, who will be happy to accommodate them.

Student grades will be based on four considerations. (1) Because of the nature of this
course, the primary criterion will be attendance (75%). Students who depart from the
tour without prior permission from an instructor will receive an automatic failure. (2) 10%
of the grade will be based on an on-site presentation to the entire group on some facet
of that site (geological or archaeological). That presentation will require research and
preparation of a short written summary of the topic before the trip, which will take place
during the spring semester. Presentation topics must be approved by one of the
instructors early in the semester. (3) Students will be required to keep a journal in which
they record their observations and impressions, as well as notes on the field
presentations. Journals will be checked and will contribute 5% of the grade. (4) The final
10% of the grade will be based on the student's cooperation with the instructor and
fellow students, and his/her willingness to learn course content in both archaeology and
geology.

The cost of the trip is estimated to be $3000, plus some additional costs. This amount
includes airfare (Fargo-Rome-Fargo), tuition, transportation in Italy, lodging (based on
double occupancy), some food, and museum/site entry fees. Only some of this sum will
be charged up front as a set fee (e.g., tuition, lodging, transportation); other costs will be
paid by the participant during the trip (e.g., most of the meals and the entry fees) and
will vary by individual. Consequently, a precise cost cannot be given in advance. Costs
not included in this estimate are the following: laundry, tips, airport departure tax, airfare
from a city other than Fargo, souvenirs, medical expenses related to the trip
(inoculations, precautionary medicines, other medicines), passport fee, film, and other
costs not specifically included.
