SATURDAY, SEPT. 11: FARGO TO MOOSE LAKE, MINNESOTA

  • Meet at Stevens Hall parking lot at 6:30 a.m. to load bus. Bus departs at 7:00 a.m.

  • STOP: Sediments of Glacial Lake Agassiz.

  • STOP: Glacial Deposits of central Minnesota

  • STOP: Animikie Group sediments near Thomson, Minnesota.

  • STOP and OVERNIGHT: Moose Lake State Park, Moose Lake, Minn.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 12: MOOSE LAKE TO NEAR GRAND MARAIS, MN, ALONG U.S. 61
  • STOP: Duluth Complex at Duluth (several stops along Skyline Parkway).

  • STOP: North Shore Volcanic Group, Lester River, Duluth, Minn.

  • STOP: North Shore Volcanic Group, Gooseberry Falls St. Park.

  • STOP: Beaver Bay Complex / Split Rock, Silver Bay, Minnesota.

  • STOP: North Shore Volcanic Group, Tettegouche St. Park.

  • STOP and OVERNIGHT: Cascade River State Park. Group camping.

MONDAY, SEPT. 13: GEOLOGY OF THE GUNFLINT TRAIL

  • Multiple stops along Gunflint Trail.

  • STOP: End of Trail - Saganaga Tonalite

  • STOP: Gunflint Formation

  • STOP and OVERNIGHT: Cascade River State Park. Group camping.


TUESDAY, SEPT. 14: LUTSEN, MN TO NEAR ELY, MN
  • STOP: Interflow sandstone of the North Shore Volcanic Group.

  • STOP: Rove Fm., Logan group, at Mount Josephine roadcut of US 61.

  • STOP: Rhyolitic tuff outcrop, Illgen City, Hwy 1 and 61, Minn.

  • STOP: Anorthositic Series of the Duluth Complex, near Skibo, Minn.

  • STOP: Base and precious metals in the Duluth Complex. Polymet mining, Hoyt Lakes, Minn.

  • OVERNIGHT: South Kawishiwi Campground, near Ely, Minn.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15: ELY, MN TO FARGO

  • STOP: Iron Formation at Soudan Underground Mine State Park, Soudan, Minnesota. Underground tour.

  • STOP: Lake Vermilion Fm metasediments, Tower, Minn.

  • STOP: Hibbing Taconite Mine, Hibbing, Minnesota.

  • Arrive back in Fargo at 10 P.M. (?)
