The Blood Vascular System

The main components of the blood vascular system are the heart and the blood vessels through which the heart pumps the blood (arteries, capillaries and veins).

There are 2 main parts to the blood vascular system.

bulletThe systemic circulation, which carries bright red, freshly oxygenated blood to the body's cells
bulletThe pulmonary circulation, which carries dark, high carbon dioxide blood to the lungs for oxygenation.

Blood vessels are a complex series of branching tubes that carry blood throughout the body.

The heart is a multichambered pump that supplies blood to the systemic and pulmonary circulations.

The fetal blood vascular system has some significant structural differences from that of an animal after birth.
