Physiological Properties

One-celled organisms must be able to "do it all" to ensure their survival. Cells in more complex animals often specialize in certain of the basic physiological properties:

bulletAbsorption of substances into the cell
bulletExcretion of wastes and/or Secretion of useful substances from the cell.
bulletMetabolism
bulletCatabolism -- breakdown reactions that produce energy
bulletAnabolism -- synthetic reactions that consume energy
bulletGrowth of the cell.
bulletReproduction by mitosis or meiosis.
bulletExcitability - the ability to react to a stimulus.
bulletConduction - the ability to conduct an impusle from one part of the cell to another.
bulletContraction - the ability to shorten the cell in some direction when it is stimulated.
