Structure of the Digestive Tube

 

 Mucosa - lining layer

bulletepithelium - stratified squamous lines the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and anus. Simple columnar lines the stomach and intestine.

Submucosa - tough layer of dense connective tissue

 

Muscle

 

bulletskeletal (voluntary) muscle in the mouth, pharynx, cranial esophagus and external anal sphincter
bulletsmooth (involuntary) muscle in the rest of the digestive tube

 

Serosa - this is an outer connective tissue covering. In the abdominal cavity this is covered by a thin layer of visceral peritoneum.
